Gram Flour Pan Cakes (Besan Chila)

Servings: 7-8 small pan cakes (depends on what size you want to make)

Cooking Time: 45 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 cup gram flour (besan)
  • 2 tbsp semolina (suji/rawa)
  • 2 tbsp rice flour (optional)
  • 1 medium sized onion finely chopped
  • 2-3 green chilies finely chopped (you can adjust it according to taste or you can avoid it if making for kids)
  • 2 tbsp finely chopped coriander
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp red chili powder (you can adjust it according to taste)
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tbsp hot oil
  • Water for making the batter
  • Oil for cooking pan cakes (vegetable/peanut/canola any)

Procedure:

Step 1: In a deep bowl combine all the ingredients except water and mix nicely.Then adding little water at a time make batter for the pan cakes.The batter should not be very dense or runny.It should be of medium consistency.Like you make for dosa or utappam.

Step 2: Heat a tawa or non stick pan on medium heat.When tawa is hot enough(you can check whether tawa is hot or not by sprinkling some water on it,if water starts sizzling as soon as you sprinkle then it means tawa is ready to make the pan cakes)then with help of spoon spread one spoon(this is for making small pan cakes,if you want to make big pan cake then add 2-3 spoon and here spoon means big spoon which we use for cooking or serving) of batter on tawa. Then add around 1 tsp oil in the corners of the pan cakes,add oil around whole circumference of pan cake.

Step 3: Keep the heat on medium only.If you increase the heat then it will cook fast but the inside can remain raw and it will not be crunchy also.Let it cook completely from one side,after 2-3 minutes with the help of flat spatula turn it over to the other side and cook it by adding some more oil if needed.If you use non stick pan or tawa then you can make one pan cake with less than 1 tsp oil.

Step 4: When the pan cake is cooked properly from both the sides then take it out in a plate.Like this make all the pan cakes with the remaining batter and serve with ketchup,coriander chutney or mint chutney or any dip of your liking.This is a super easy snack for kids as well.To make it more healthy you can also grate some carrots or zucchini in the batter for the kids or you can also make it in different shapes with help of different shapes cut outs (steel ones) available in market.Like this it will be fun for kids and they will enjoy it.It is also a quick recipe for kids lunch box as well.It goes superb with hot tea.So do try this super simple recipe and let me know how you like it.
